At the time I was thinking of what direction to go with the prints for the collection, the main things on my mind were the importance of honouring culture, tradition and historical continuity in the face of the high levels of cultural aggression and and disintegration. The collection itself was already majorly inspired by the Pan-Africanism movement so bringing together all these elements of African history seemed like a good place to start from.
For the colours of the collectio itself, I chose to go with shades of green (teal), yellow (mustard) and red (copper) as they represent the colours on the Ethiopian flag, Ethiopia being Africa’s oldest nation to gain independence. I combined these colours with strong Ghanian symbols and produced the fabrics using batik (done on cotton) and aso-oke all hand made in Lagos.
The signs I opted to work with in designing the prints influenced the name of the collection “SOVEREIGNTY” and they are; Adinkrahene (A symbol of leadership and charisma), Adwo (Tranquility), Duafe (Beauty), Gye Nyame (God’s Omnipotence). All of these elements brought together combined with my brand’s classic silhouette makes the collection to be not just about clothes but to also depict the sovereign nature of the eternal ruler (God) and how this nature transcends to man who has been given the authority to rule over earth’s entirety.
